Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site – Sigiriya or Lion’s Rock
The focal point of thousands of photographs and still admired to this day, Sigiriya was once a magnificent fortress and citadel. Almost 1,600 years ago a patricidal king built his palace on top of this giant rock which would become one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Sri Lanka and the world.
Sigiriya is important archeologically for many reasons. The gardens of Sigiriya are amongst the oldest landscaped gardens in the world; divided into three distinct but linked forms: water gardens, cave and boulder gardens, and terraced gardens. It is a symbol of true eco-friendly design with clear evidence of how the architects took great effort to blend in with the beauty of the natural landscape rather than destroy it.
Walk through the magical landscaped gardens, marvel at the ingenuity of the ancient engineers who used the power of gravity to create amazing fountains which are still functional to this day, sit in the shade of the cave rooms and imagine how majestic this all may have looked like at the peak of its splendor and fame.
Let our expert naturalist guide you through the various different elements of the archeological sites, stopping by under the shade of ancient trees to tell you the stories which the history books tell us, which add colour and flavor to the story of Sigiriya.
