Visit the local farmers of Sigiriya and enjoy a delicious village breakfast under the trees

Traditionally most Sri Lankans were farmers who lived a self-sustainable lifestyle. They grew rice twice a year in line with the monsoon seasons across expansive paddy fields and all the rest of their daily needs were met either via their home gardens or through bartering. They only needed to pay for their sugar, salt and fish, often these too were acquired through bartering. 

 

Even in today’s rapidly developing urban environment, roughly ¼ of Sri Lankans are engaged in agriculture. The farmers in Sigiriya practice dry-zone or chena-farming. An ancient way of living which they have sustained through the ages despite recent obstacles like climate change and the human-wildlife-conflict. 

 

In this delightful walking and cycling tour, you have the opportunity to meet and spend time with some of the local chena-farmers of the ancient village of Sigiriya. You can even try your hand at some local farming techniques and learn more about this traditional way of farming from the farmer himself. 

 

Afterwards you can enjoy a delicious village breakfast, lovingly prepared using locally grown fresh produce straight from the chena farms.
