Explore Sigiriya on 2 wheels

Sigiriya is possibly the most mystical archeological site in Sri Lanka. Steeped in lore and myth, it rose to fame when almost 1,500 years ago a patricidal king named Kassapa built his castle on top of this giant rock thrusting 200 metres above the surrounding forest plateau; reminiscent of ‘Alakamandawa’ the legendary palace of Kuvera, the god king of Lanka.

There are many ways to see Sigiriya and there is more to this giant rock than meets the eye. At its peak the royal city of Sigiriya was over 100 hectares in extent, and included inner and outer cities as well as many royal gardens and palaces.

Sigiriya is important archeologically for many reasons. The gardens of Sigiriya are amongst the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. The gardens are divided into three distinct but linked forms: water gardens, cave and boulder gardens, and terraced gardens.

One of the best ways to see Sigiriya is on two wheels. Take your time with the various elements of the archeological site, gardens, moats and ramparts. Read up on the history before you arrive to enhance your appreciation of this unique and mystical archeological miracle and the 8thwonder of the world.
