Cycle around the mystical moats of Sigiriya
The architects of the Sigiriya rock fortress were surely some of the best in the world at the time. The gardens of Sigiriya are amongst the oldest landscaped gardens in the world and are divided into three distinct but linked forms: water gardens, cave and boulder gardens, and terraced gardens.
The boundary of the Sigiriya complex was clearly marked by multiple ramparts and moats. The moats did not quite encircle the citadel due to the topography of the land. The best restored section is the western inner moat connecting the Northern and Southern Entrances.
A meandering cycle ride along the moats at dawn or dusk is a perfect way to appreciate the combination of symmetrical structures and the natural world of water, flora and fauna. The conical reflection of the Erauala mountain range, on the long waters of the Western moat is so perfect that it makes you wonder if it was designed to capture that exact effect by the ancient architects.
